Vapor intrusion is the seepage of chemical vapors from contaminated soil (often dryer cleaner solvents and petroleum leaks) into nearby buildings. Like radon, these vapors enter buildings through cracks in the building's structure, such as the concrete floors or basement walls. Inhaling these vapors may cause immediate and/or long-term health risks for the building's occupants.
Vapor mitigation systems are available for both existing buildings and new construction planned near a contaminated area. Installing a vapor mitigation system during construction is more cost-effective and less disruptive than waiting until after construction is completed.
In almost all cases, chemical vapor levels are lowered through the installation of a sub-slab depressurization system. This is done by installing a fan that draws soil gasses from below the basement floor through a pipe that vents out the roof of the building.
